How To Make A Cheap And Easy Gourmet Gift Basket For Mom

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas recipes

Gift baskets are always popular and a great idea to give as a gift whether for Mother’s Day or any other time of the year. Moms love to receive gift baskets. Making your own gourmet ‘mom’ gift basket is cheap and easy. You can fill your gift basket with a variety of inexpensive quality items; you have lots of choices.

I’ve put together a few great tips and ideas for making ‘mom’ gift baskets, complete with instructions on how to make them. You can make inexpensive gift baskets or expensive gift baskets depending on your budget. You can easily customize each basket to your recipient.

First make a list of the mom’s hobbies and interests. List everything you can think of that might possibly pertain.

Suggestions: sports, books, television shows, in-house hobbies, outdoor recreation, camping, workshop, tools, golf, fishing, computer-related, environment friendly, golf, tennis, relaxation, food, chocolate, wine, spa, bath and body, fruit, cookie, etc. These are just a few ideas.

You can find many inexpensive items and products for use in making your gift baskets or filling your gift baskets, at ‘dollar’ stores, craft stores, party stores, discount outlets, flea markets, close-out stores and even at garage sales providing the items are new, etc.

For gift containers you can use: any type of basket, wicker basket, straw basket, bucket, laundry basket, plastic container, purse, tin, seasonal container, large tea pot, large upside-down hat, red hat or plastic storage container-put lid underneath.

Other items: extra-large coffee mug, boot, potted plant holder, wire basket, large pasta bowl, large popcorn bowl, cooking pot, clay pot, colander, skillet, antique trunk, champagne bucket, hamper, Asian-style trunk or picnic basket.

For gift basket liner you can use: tissue paper, shredded paper, shredded newspaper, tea towels, dish towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, colored towels, colored napkins, placemats, or fabric pieces.

For gift basket filler you can use: shredded colored paper, straw, Easter basket grass, crumpled newspaper comics, a bed of wrapped chocolates or other wrapped candy.

For items in the container it’ll depend on the specialty or theme of the gift basket – in this case a mom. Here is a small random sampling to give you a few good ideas:

Gift certificate for massage or spa visit, scented oils, scented massage oils, gift certificate to favorite store, gift certificate for restaurant, loofah, fragrant candle, matches to light candles, CD of nature sounds, favorite artist CD, DVD of newer release movie, how-to video or CD, handwritten poem, perfume, cologne, watch, framed photo, inspirational book, spa pillows, bath pillows, spa supplies, bath and body products, facial and body scrubs, handmade soaps, fragrant soaps, shampoos, hand and foot lotion or fluffy towel.

Flavored teas, green tea, specialty tea, herbal tea, biscotti, tea infuser, healthy snacks, fancy chocolates, boxed chocolates, chocolate bars, hot chocolate mix, specialty coffee mix, homemade cookies, homemade brownies, homemade jams, popcorn, caramel corn, giant-size boxed candy, candy canes, suckers, lollipops, apple, pear, orange, persimmon, mango, papaya, chips, pretzels, nuts, gourmet pasta, gourmet olive oil, pre-packaged food items, pancake mixes, brownie mixes, cookie mixes, wooden spoons, your best chocolate chip cookie recipe, Italian recipes, Mexican food recipes or other ethnic recipes, coffee mug, or potholders.

Garden trowel or other garden tools, garden gloves, work gloves, cold weather gloves, leather gloves, garden picks, seeds, hand lotion, flower pot , small tools, gadgets, playing cards, travel-size games, small puzzles, t-shirt, tickets to events,
small plant, disposable camera, a small book,

Computer-related items, mouse pad, yarn, painting or artist supplies, golf balls, golf tees, golf knick knacks, tennis balls, tennis knick knacks, key chains, small calendars or desk calendars, barometer, outdoor thermometer, science gadgets, electronic gadgets, health-related items, auto-related items or cinnamon sticks.

For gift basket wrapping you can use tulle netting or better yet, cellophane wrap. If you’re going to use a lot of cellophane you can purchase it in large rolls wholesale through the packaging specialty stores throughout the U.S. but should be easily found in craft stores.

Tie off the wrapped basket with ribbon. Wired fabric ribbon is best if you have it.

For bows: You can use pre-packaged bows but making your own bow is easy and a better presentation if you can do it. Use a huge beautiful bow.

Assemble all your gift basket items, the tools you need, etc. Now line your selected gift container. Then stuff the selected filler into the gift basket to give added height to your items. Place, layer and arrange your selected items on the filler in the gift container. Put the larger items in the back, the smaller items in front.

Fill in the holes or prop up with more filler (shredded paper, Easter basket grass, wrapped chocolates, napkins or holiday napkins etc.)

Also you can use ‘picks’ of artificial flowers to fill in small open spots.

Place your cellophane or other wrap under the gift basket. Center the gift basket on the wrap. Bring the cellophane or other wrap over the top of the gift basket and tie it with ribbon and/or a beautiful bow! Use ribbon and bows to match your theme colors.

Tuck a personalized card in the ribbon and that’s it!

General tips: You can find fabric or wired ribbon cheaply at Costco — especially in the fall prior to Christmas or around holidays but often throughout the year in most stores. You can shred colored paper in a paper shredder.

Try to use non-perishable items except, of course, when making fruit baskets. Use freshly packaged food items; packaged crackers and cookies can go stale in a couple of months.

You can find filler flower ‘picks’ at garage sales cheaply. If you buy ‘picks’ wholesale they are usually around a dollar each.

Try not to mix chocolate or other food fragrant items with non-food fragrant items in the same basket.

Also there’s nothing like learning how to make gift baskets from a video or DVD for making cheap and easy gift baskets. You can view it over and over again and share it with your children, other family members and friends. You can even charge for classes with your new-found knowledge and/or start a home based business if you so desire. In any event, making a gourmet mom gift basket can be cheap and easy.

A Health Magazine Offers Useful Information About Family Health Care

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas recipes

In today’s world, almost everyone is aware of the need to monitor health issues for the continued good health of their families and selves. We know that we have to watch our fat intake, calories, cholesterol, sugars and a host of other diet no-no’s. With convenience foods and fast food outlets, most of us are hard pressed to keep on the cutting edge of what we should or should not ingest! If you factor in the latest findings and research, keeping on top of it all can be a nightmare. This is where the health magazine can be a godsend.

There are a number of health magazines out there to keep you up to date. Some emphasize a natural approach to good health, with features on herbs, supplements and various alternative disciplines to keep you and your family fit and vigorous.

Another type of health magazine may focus on cooking low fat versions of your favorite dishes, keeping you abreast of the latest recipes that replicate the delicious fatty version with an equally delicious but healthier result.

A good health magazine can make a terrific one stop resource for health information that doesn’t read like an encyclopedia, enabling you to be a savvy and knowledgeable consumer and guardian of your family’s health.

A publisher of a successful health magazine tries to give you the most up to date information in an easily read format and style suitable to the layman.

A health magazine, like any other magazine, is geared to the season, letting you make the best and healthiest use of your strawberry crop in delicious recipes, while informing you of the particular health benefits of strawberries. Come Christmas, you’ll likely see features on holiday foods which can be prepared in a healthier way than the traditional calorie laden recipe without sacrificing taste. Summertime issues of the health magazine may offer inviting recipes for cooling summer drinks “seasoned” with herbs to benefit both your health and taste buds.

The latest research on a supplement may enlighten you on how you might help a family member with diabetes, heart trouble, arthritis and a host of other common conditions.

It’s worth your while to explore the many magazines available at the supermarket, newsstand or by subscription. The health magazine can be a veritable treasure trove of information that will help you and your family members stay healthy and be an enjoyable read to boot.

Turning to Internet Shopping for Christmas

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas presents

The festive season of Christmas always remind me of the scenes of packed and over-crowded shopping malls and centers filled with busy people shopping for their christmas gifts and presents. There are some people out there who relate Christmas with such congestion and chaos that add to the merry festival moods of the coming holidays. While they are part of the group that enjoys such shopping, there are another group who try different means to avoid such frustrating and stressful shopping altogether. For these people, the evolution of electronic commerce has introduced online shopping as a new dimension of shopping beyond the traditional shopping. There have been a massive influx of shoppers that are starting to embrace online shopping to fulfill part or even all of their shopping for the Christmas.

One of the most useful tips for Christmas shopping online is to do your Christmas shopping early but not too early. It is important to complete your online Christmas early enough to have the item shipped to the recipient in time to arrive before Christmas without incurring charges for rushed shipping. This is important because you want your friend or family member to receive the gift on time but you dont wan to pay a great deal of extra money for shipping. Standard shipping rates are typically quite reasonable but express shipping rates can be rather expensive. While it is important to complete your online Christmas shopping early enough to get the gift to your friend or family member before Christmas, you do not want the gift to arrive early. While there is technically nothing wrong with this, it may be result in the gift being opened early or the recipient putting the gift in safe spot until Christmas and then forgetting it was ever received.

One problem which can occur when you do your Christmas shopping online is that the item you purchase may look better online than it does in reality. To avoid this problem it is best to only purchase items online if you are absolutely sure what the item actually looks like. For example you may have seen a particular model of a coffee maker in stores. When purchasing the item online you should compare the model number to ensure you are purchasing the item you really want. If you do this you, and the recipient of the gift, will likely be pleased with the purchase. If you have never seen the item in person it is important to view the item carefully. You should study all of the given information including the measurements to ensure the item you are envisioning as you view the online advertisement is the item you friend or family member will receive in the mail.

As Internet has allowed conducting of business easier, faster and less hassle, the online marketplace may be bombarded with retailers and suppliers with both good and bad reputation. It is important to recognize these two types of sellers so that you do not end up purchasing from a rogue website. Reputation is a key factor that is related to reliability and trust. Do not be tempted with a bargain offer with a badly reputable seller because you may risk getting a low quality product or compromise for factors such as lack of privacy protection, security issue and so forth. Despite the fact that you may pay a little bit more for shopping with an established and reputable seller, you may overcome the possible poor services, security and other risks that many have experienced on the Internet. Therefore, it is a generally good practice that you study the websites privacy statement, customer services policy, refund or satisfaction policy, testimonials and any forms of authentication and certification with logos such as Hacker safe, Trust guard, eTrust, Komodo seal and others.

Fast and Easy – Organize Your Christmas Decorations and Put Them Away

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas ornaments

Let’s start the New Year off right. Oops, we still have to take care of last year. This means those beautiful Christmas decorations that we know have to be put away, but we really aren’t ready to do it, are we? And what about our New Year’s resolutions? We want to start those, but maybe we should get that Christmas stuff put away first. We’re going to show you an fast and easy way to get this done.

So let’s begin with our first resolution, shall we? Do you search for that special ornament every year? We are going to take care of that problem so we can easily find everything next year. But next year seems so far away and we’ll get to those boxes before then and organize everything. So before we know it, we are putting everything in boxes, usually without labels, with the best of intentions to get it all organized before next Christmas.

We all know this isn’t going to happen. All we are doing is making next year’s decorating job more time consuming and much more difficult than it has to be.

To do it right, get yourself a few large boxes or large plastic storage bins with lids and some newspapers. Cushion the bottom of the box with crumpled up tissue paper, newspaper, or even recycle the wrapping paper that came off the gifts, if you still have it. Remove all heirloom or breakable ornaments from the tree and wrap them in tissue paper to protect them. Take more newspaper and make another layer and repeat the process. Label the box and you are done with the ornaments.

If you are save lights from year to year, here’s a great way to store them without having a tangle next year. Take those newspapers again and roll 5 or 6 pages up to form a tube. After carefully removing each string of lights from the tree, wrap each string around a tube, put the tubes in a box, label and you are finished with that chore.

For your artificial greenery around the house, first, get a box, (but you knew that, right?) roll up each piece or section, put it in a clear plastic bag and seal it with packing tape. You won’t need a lot of tape, just enough to label the bag. Repeat this until you have all the greenery packed away. Get more of those boxes, fill them with the wrapped greenery, label, and you guessed it, you’re done.

Now, if you have special dishes just for the holidays, cookie jars, candy dishes, etc., you will want to do the same thing. This time you want to be extra careful because most of these things will be breakable. Pretend you are moving, and wrap each item securely and pack it in a box with cushioning, filling any gaps with crumpled paper to keep everything safe until next Christmas.

Oh, did we forget about the tree? If it is an artificial tree, hopefully you have saved the box it came in when you bought it. If not, try to find a box it will fit in, pack it neatly in the box and label it. If you can’t locate a box, wrap it in plastic to protect it from dust. You can buy a large roll of painter’s plastic at any home improvement store for about $10 and you will have plenty left over for any future projects you may have.

Don’t you feel better? Just knowing that when it comes time for the holidays next year, you won’t have to search for anything. It will all be packed away and labeled neatly, just ready for you to open up and know exactly what’s in there. Merry Christmas 2009.

Begin Planning Christmas in April – Part 1

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas lights

Hanging up stockings is a Christmas tradition. How did it begin? I have two different stories to tell. The first is that when dear old Santa Claus came down the chimneys (with great difficulty, because of his chubby tummy) he jiggled and shook, occasionally and accidentally, letting small gifts fall out of his sack and into the socks and stockings which hung around the fireplace to dry over night. Of course, when the happy owners of the stockings and socks came to don their warm, dry, hosiery in the morning, they were cheerfully surprised to find their stockings filled with ‘delights’.

The second story is that the origin of this wonderful tradition dates back to the fourth century. It was attributed to the real Saint Nicholas who was especially famous for his kindness to children. St. Nicholas heard about three poor sisters whose father was very poor. So poor was this man and desperate as well, because he could not afford to provide any of his daughters with dowries so they could marry. The legend tells us that on Christmas Eve, the sisters, as was their usual custom, washed their stockings, and hung them near the chimney to dry. Secretly, that same night, St. Nicholas visited their home, climbed upon the roof of their home, tossing a handful of gold coins down their chimney. When the gold coins tinkled down the chimney, amazingly they fell into the maidens the stockings. All the sisters were wed happily, thereby giving birth to the tradition of the Christmas stocking.

These days, Christmas stockings are an essential highlight of Christmas, though when we hang them out now (even though we may not have a fireplace) we do tend to hang out our stockings, expecting them to be filled with little treats in the morning. Finding just the right Christmas stockings is simple with fantastic sites like everythingchristmas.com.au, where you can do all your online shopping and have fast delivery to your door. Another great online site where you can register free, and search hundreds of classified pages to find stocking fillers and things for Christmas is OzFreeOnline.com.

It’s really worthwhile browsing all the latest classified listings from all over Australia, so join today and begin shopping.

Making your own Christmas stockings can be fun; get the whole family to make their own individual stocking to hang up at Christmas, you may have to help little ones with the sewing, but they can glue on any fancy bits and pieces they want to make the stocking unique to them.

You will need large pieces of coloured felt, coloured thread or wool, a large sharp embroidery needle, coloured ribbon, lace, bells, tinsel, sequins, buttons, fake holly and berries, little pine cones, PVA glue and anything else you wish to use to decorate your stockings.

Just use one of dads ‘big’ socks for the pattern and pin it to a large piece of brown paper. Cut around the sock to make a template. If you have never done anything ‘crafty’ before, don’t despair, online sites that can assist you here are spotlight.com.au, where you can learn how to do just about anything by booking into their many craft classes. OzFreeOnline.com has classified pages where in the Arts and Crafts you can browse the many free ads where people are willing to share their talents with you, and where you can place your own free ad just by registering and joining the many other Australians online.

Now that you have a pattern for the stocking, place it over two pieces of felt. The felt doesn’t have to be the same colour, so be unconventional. Pin the brown paper pattern close to the edge of the felt, and cut around the fabric. You will need both pieces of fabric to make one entire stocking.

When you have done this, pin the two pieces of felt together and sewing on the right side, work blanket stitch around the edge of the stocking to sew both parts together. Sew a piece of ribbon about 12cm long on the inside at the back of the stocking, so that you can hang your stocking up over the fireplace.

Decorate the front of the stocking with anything you like to make it ‘only one of its kind’ and glue everything in place with the PVA glue. You might even stick felt initials on it as well. The sequins will catch the lights from the Christmas tree and look lovely and sparkly when reflected at night. Now all you need to do is find a shoebox for each person in the family (aged 12 years and over) so that they can save fillers for these little stockings such as;

Lollies

Chocolates

Chocolate Santa’s

Nougat

Dried fruit

Small change

Gift vouchers

Faux jewellery

Hair clips

Football key rings

Mini notebooks or address-books

Pretty little earrings

Lace handkerchiefs

Crazy cufflinks

Tennis balls

Golf balls

‘Matchbox’ cars

And any other little ‘bits and bobs’.

Buying Christmas Gifts For Teacher

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 under christmas gifts

With Christmas fast approaching, one of the people that should be in your gift list is your teacher, especially your favorite teacher. Although it may be considered tacky to give gifts to your professors as some may see it as a form of bribery; you can still give gifts as long as they are not too expensive.

It is one way of showing teachers that you appreciate the efforts that they are making in teaching you what you need to learn. Below are some gift ideas for teachers that they will surely appreciate.

1. Cake and pastries

Who doesn’t want to be given cake and pastries? This is a wonderful holiday gift especially if you are going to have it designed in festive colors and figures. Of course, before you bake the cake or before you buy one, do some research and ask around for your teacher’s favorite flavor. Does she love chocolate cake or is more partial to mocha or mango? Does she like cakes or does she prefer cookies or tarts? It is often good to do some digging. It shows that you care enough to spend time in research.

2. Fruits

Apples have long been associated with gifts for teachers. Well, you can do better than that by giving them a basket of fruits that they can take to the faculty room or to their homes. Include fruits that are not so usual to lend it a more unique feel. Make sure that the fruits are fresh and ripe.

3. Turkey, Ham and other Holiday feast

Another great gift that you can give your teachers are turkey, ham or any food that they can serve in their dinner table come Holiday. You can either roast them yourself or buy one from the corner store.

4. Greeting Cards

Even as simple as a Christmas greeting card is enough to make your teacher smile. There are cheap cards available in bookstores that you can use. If you don’t have the money to spend for ready made Holiday cards, you can always make your own greetings cards.

In fact, they will better appreciate a handmade card because they know that it is something that you spent time and effort on. Besides, it is a great way to exercise your creativity and artistry plus of course some vocabulary!

5. Chocolates

Chocolates work their magic every time. One great time to buy lots of chocolates at really low prices is after Halloween when stores organize sale of leftover candies and chocolates from Halloween Trick or Treating.
