Chocolate Reindeer Cookies

1 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
72 small pretzel twists
72 candy-coated milk chocolate pieces
36 small red gum drops

In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, cocoa powder, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour.
Divide dough into 6 equal portions. Wrap portions in waxed paper or plastic wrap. Chill for 3 hours or until dough is easy to handle.
On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough portion into a circle 6 inches in diameter. Using a knife, cut each circle into 6 wedges. Place wedges 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
For antlers, on each triangle lightly press a pretzel into the upper corners. Press in chocolate pieces for eyes. For a nose, press a red gumdrop into the dough triangle about 1/2 inch from the point.
Bake in a 375° F oven for 7 to 9 minutes or until edges are firm. Do not overbake. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; cool.
Makes 36 cookies

Where is the best place to buy ornaments. I’m starting from scratch and I don’t want to spend a fortune.
Thank you for all your answers.

Hallmark would be a good place.

Christmas presents?

Posted by admin on Feb 13, 2010 under christmas presents

I was just wondering how many christmas presents you get for each child, spouse, and family members? My mother was always a big christmas person. We each got about 15 – 20 gifts (5 kids). But she used christams to make up for some of the other crap she did. So me and hubby often disagree on how many presents I buy for the kids. So I was just looking to see what people do out there. Any feedback would be appreciated.

My dear mother was like that too, only difference is she wasn’t making up for crap she did. I’m sorry you had that as a child. They may have been little gifts but she made sure she wrapped each one separately. I’m in the same boat as my husband is like yours. His family didn’t do that but you tend to follow the traditions you were brought up with. Our children (blended family) are adults and there are grandchildren, but I still buy more than one gift for each. Isn’t that what we, as parents, are supposed to do? What kid, no matter their age, wants to sit and open one gift. That sounds so commercial, but I know they really appreciate them and I’m a giver and the more I can give, even if they’re small gifts, the happier that makes me when I see their faces. I say, what’s ever in your budget, go for it. My son, for instance, tells me if he wants one certain big gift or more smaller ones.

Posted by admin on Feb 13, 2010 under christmas cards

Both of my grandparents passed away in May and right now I am living in their house, fixing it up. A few people who obviously hadn’t heard sent christmas cards. I didn’t want to do this during the holidays, but should I write them letters explaining the situation?

i would definitely respond to these people. send back the cards with a little note explaining what happened.
